SILENCE
In our current world, with all the distractions constantly surrounding us, silence seems to be a missing commodity. We have all sorts of equipment to connect to and distract us twenty four hours a day seven days a week. We have desk top computers, lap tops, cell phones, I-pads, flat screen televisions, social media, traditional media, satellite radios, all sorts of apps to keep us all connected. Or should I say disconnected. Disconnected from ourselves. Think for a moment about all the unintended consequences. Because, we have all these advancements in technology, we do not really have to socialize in person or by phone with anyone. So in essence, we have become disconnected not only from ourselves but from everyone else. It has created an increase level of stress that was unexpected. It has lead to an increase in individual using external means for relief such as medication, alcohol, illicit drugs or therapy for relief. This can be a dangerous road. I propose looking internally for relief.
Silence is extremely helpful in re-booting your system. We turn off our computers and cell phones to re-boot them. Our brains are no different. This is why I am suggesting using silence to re-boot and connect you to yourself. For me I enjoy silent time in conjunction with meditation. For beginners, meditation can be difficult without complete silence but, silence alone is helpful. They both can be done together or separately. Myself, being born and raised in New York City, I can meditate and find silence in the middle of times square with thousands of individuals all around. However, I do not recommend that environment for beginners. There are many ways to use silence for your benefit. You can find a place in the middle of the day were go can go for quiet time and just sit with your eyes closed for awhile. And, when I say for awhile, I am not saying taking a nap. Just to be clear. Other times, which I personally find more beneficial because I combine silence with meditation, is either right before I fall asleep or, in the morning before everyone gets up. I also sometimes get up in the middle of the night and meditate.
I find tremendous benefit in silence because it connects me to my source. To the spirit within that we all have. It is a time for me to be able to have a conversation, not a verbal conversation, but a conversation with this all powerful universal source. Beware of a common mistake that many make. That is, that if you are using silent time to think about your problems then, you are wasting your time and, it can be worse for you. If you use your silent time correctly it can make you aware that you are not just your body but that you are something deeper. One other benefit is that you are going from a conscious state of mind to a subconscious state. In essence, it makes you aware that we are all connected. And, because of this it will transform you into a better person. This is so important because of the advances in technology which have contributed to our disconnection from ourselves and isolation in society. In silence, you are made aware of who you really are. I leave you with a poem on point: titled, "Silence."
"I catch the pattern of your silence
before you speak.
I do not need to hear a word.
In your silence, every tone I seek
is heard."
Langston Hughes
Just a thought.
