NOW
Most people look towards the future. It is great to have future goals. I have them. But, I also understand that the future, although I expect it to arrive, may never arrive. It is not a guarantee. The past is history. No matter how much you may want to change your past, I am here to inform you that you will never change it. Obviously it was what it was and it will always be a part of who you presently are but that is it. Acknowledge it and move on.
Time is NOW. Most of us are too busy regretting the past or waiting for something in the future. I had a sister who died not too long ago. Her eager anticipation when she became a middle aged women was that she could not wait to reach her 65th birthday to collect her meager social security benefits. She died at 63. Her anticipation of her 65th birthday never arrived. I also, have a dear friend who has a plan of someday starting his own business. Years ago he informed me that once his only daughter goes to college, he will be in a better position to move forward with his dream of opening his own business. His daughter recently left for college and he told me that once his daughter graduated college that he will pursue his dream. He has decided to continue to work his 60 hours a week job that he despises.
Whether the future does not arrive because of conditions beyond your control or by choice, it does not matter. The end result is the same. The way I see it, most people live on what I call "Someday Island." Someday, I will do this. Someday, I will do that. Someday I will start to work out because I can not go to a gym because of our current pandemic. Although, they do not have to go to a gym to stay fit. Then once the pandemic is over, well I will start after the kids go back to school because they need me to spend time with them. Then after the kids go back to school, well, I will start after I settle in because I have been so busy with them, that now I need a little time to take care of some house projects that I neglected because, I had no time while the kids were home. Then, I will start as soon as my kid's fall sports activity ends, because I have all the associated activity with the PTO. Then, after the fall activities end, I will start after the winter because this weather is just too crazy cold. Then when spring comes, I will start after spring break because the kids are home. Then after they go back to school, I will start after Spring sports season is over because I can not find the time. Then after spring sports activities are over, I will start in the fall because school is out for the summer, the kids are home, and I have no time. You get my point.
Time is today. Not what was or what it will be. The only real time is today. Do what you want to do. It really makes no difference whether you are a family person with the added responsibilities or a single person. If you are done growing or creating you will wither away. If you are not willing to take a chance on what your heart desires, you are either, exactly where you always wanted to be and there is nothing wrong with that or you are unhappy. Look in the mirror and see the person you want to be and start your journey. It is never too late. If you are alive and breathing you have what it takes. Do not leave this planet with your dreams unfulfilled. Not only are you depriving yourself but, you are depriving your family and society in general. We are all here to leave the world a better place. I leave you with a quote from John F. Kennedy. "Ask not what your country can do for you- ask what you can do for your country." Do for your country what you were put on this earth to do. Follow your heart and it will lead you in the right direction.
