DOTS
In essence, we are all dots on the canvass of life. Being born and raised in New York City has had a significant impact in how I view life. I was always amazed and still am at how many people are concentrated in such a small geographical area such as New York City. Manhattan, which is one of the boroughs of New York City, where I was born and raised, has an estimated population of 1.63 million people all living an area of just 23 square miles. This gives Manhattan a population density of 70,826 people per square mile. Manhattan is the most densely populated of the five New York City boroughs. On weekends, the number of commuters pushes the Manhattan population to more than 3.9 million, or 170,000 people per square mile. "World Population Review."
Needless to say, growing up in New York City has had a tremendous impact on how I view life. As a kid I would just walk around amazed at the amount of people all heading in different directions. It is more common than not to see thousands of people walking down any given street constantly at any given time of the day or night. It truly is the City that never sleeps. Similar to your soul or energy or your spirit or call it whatever you want to but one thing for sure, it never sleeps. Think about it, what do you think keeps you alive and all your organs functioning when you are sleeping? I always had questions about not just my existence, but our existence collectively. My questions could never be answered. I would approach my parents but they could not answer them. They would advise me to go see our catholic priest. I would approach our priest and He could not answer my questions. He would bless me and tell me to recite the Holy Mary prayer 10 time so I can be forgiven for asking and, sent me on my way. Looking back, he probably advised my parents to get me to a shrink as soon as possible because I was possessed by some negative force. Just kidding!! But, the bottom line is that no one can answer my questions about life or who we are or what we are doing here? Then, it finally hit me. I was looking in all the wrong places. It was not that they held the secrete from me but that they themselves did not know the answers.
The only person that can answer the aforementioned questions was staring me in the face every time I looked in the mirror. That is right! The only person that can answer my questions is me. I do not believe I possess any special powers. Although, my parents named me at birth Jesus. However, when I became an adult I had my birth name changed to Jay. Maybe, they saw something special in me!! Just kidding, although they did name me Jesus. By all accounts, I was a "normal" kid, whatever that means. I participated in sports and had a normal social life. But, I always had this desire to go deeper into not just what we see with our eyes but what we do not see. So the answers to my questions came from reading, research and just plain old common sense. This journey has lead to my enlightenment. It was a total feeling of euphoria!! I have always been told, I beat to the beat of a different drummer. I used to think that was an insult but, after my enlightenment I realized it is a compliment.
It does not matter, where we live or how we were raised or any other obstacles or self imposed identifiers we want to use. We are all a dot on a canvass. That canvas is life. We can be a shining dot or a dot that blends in. That decision comes from our will to choose and be whoever we want. I remember hearing Steve Jobs commencement speech at Stanford University where he stated, " … you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in the future. You have to trust in something- your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever..." June 14, 2004
There are approximately 8 billion people on the planet currently. That is a lot of dots on the canvas of life. The question you may want to ask is, do you want to be the shining dot connected to your source with all the powers that are rightfully yours from birth or would you rather be the dot that blends in with the other dots and just goes along like a waive in the ocean and gets send in any direction that the wind blows. I leave you with a quote on point by David Byrne.
"Everything's intentional. It's just filling in the dots."
