CIRCUMSTANCE
Many individuals use circumstances to excuse their ineffectiveness or lack of accomplishment. If you look at the word circumstance, you can break it down into two parts. Stance which means the way in which someone stands especially when deliberately adopted as in baseball, golf, and other sports and, or a person's posture. Circum is a prefix with the meaning, "round about, round." It is found in Latin loan words, especially derivatives of verbs that had the general senses, "to encompass or surround." Life is all about circumstances. Circumstances are inescapable. It is like the air we breathe. You can always use it as an excuse for action or inaction. It is predominately used for inaction; excuses to defend your lack of accomplishment. We have heard them before. I would have started my weight loss program but, the holidays are coming and you all know all those holiday goodies, so, I'll start after the holidays. The circumstances are not right. I was going to start my jogging regiment but, it was raining so I'll start when the weather is nicer. The circumstances are not right. I was going to start my online business on my spare time but, I've been pretty busy watching my favorite sport, baseball on television and, you know it's a long season and the games take about three hours so, I will start after the season ends. The circumstances are not right etc...
I have also heard the reverse. Boy, I am glad I opened the ice cream shop when I did because now, there are three other shops in town. The circumstances were right. But, if you really break it down, they are still using circumstances as an excuse because, that ice cream shop owner is telling us in reverse that he would not have opened up an ice cream shop if there were others in town. If the circumstances are not what you desire or expect, make your own! You will be surprised how things just fall into place by just doing the "something" that you want to do. Maybe, the ice cream shop owner who decided to go against conventional wisdom, and open up his shop although, there are several other ice cream shops in the area made a great decision. Because, the community wanted something different. Maybe the person who starts their weight loss regime during the holidays turns out to be a great idea because, they can eat the holiday treats without gaining extra weight because, they are balancing it out with their weight loss regime. I can go on and on but you get the idea.
It brings a personal case in point. I would never had gone to law school as a career change in my mid 30's in Columbus, Ohio, where there are two major law schools, and where Columbus has more attorneys per capita than Washington, DC, if I would have listened to conventional wisdom because, the circumstances were all pointing against my desires. You see, that is what life is all about. There will always be excuses or circumstances for or against your wants and desires. You just have to pull the trigger and go for it. Take the attitude that you'll suffer the consequences later but, just do it! If you don't, you'll never know. And, I'll let you in on a little secret. As long as you are alive, there are no circumstances that can stop you from achieving your dreams. Anything less than that are excuses to take the easy way out. So, go for it! Suffer the consequences! Create your own circumstances and I will see you at the top of the mountain. I leave you with a poem on point.
"And then I realized that to be more alive, I had to be less afraid. So, I did it! I lost my fear and gained my whole life."
