86,400

I recently returned from a trip with my family to my hometown, New York City.  I love big urban metropolis locations.  I remember when I was growing up all the people and beautiful buildings.  To me it is an environment like no other with maybe a few exceptions, like Tokyo.  We visited areas that in the previous times we visited, we would never consider going to.  One of those areas was the northern part of Manhattan located on the New York City side of the George Washington bridge.  My daughters who discovered the movie, "In the Heights," that was filmed on location,  expressed a desire to visit the aforementioned area.  It is an area that is mostly "Latino."  In fact, it feels like you're living in a foreign, Spanish speaking country akin to the Dominican Republic.  The residents were amazing.  To say they were welcoming would be an understatement.  The food was incredible.  The positive energy that was emanating from the businesses and the individuals was electrifying.  There was a sense of community.  In Spanish, it is called, "El Barrio."  It was so welcoming that my daughters who are born and raised in upper class suburbs have expressed an interest in living in, "El Barrio."  In essence, Washington Heights is a lower middle class neighborhood.  So I started thinking about the real difference aside from the obvious, in rich, well to do suburbs versus lower, middle class, working to make a living and survive neighborhoods.  To me the answer was pretty clear.
We are all related regardless of where we come from. Individuals have more in common than we are led to believe.  We all have the exact time on earth.  Of course some individuals live longer than others but in general we have the same time as it relates to a 24 hour day or, as I allude to in the title of my article 86,400, which is the seconds in a 24 hour day.  How many times have we heard, I don't have time for this or that, as an excuse for not doing something.  Or another excuse that I hear often is, I wish I had more time.   Well, you're not getting more time so why not rearrange your time to make time?  Staying fit is an important component of my life so I make time to work out by rearranging my schedule.  If I have a full schedule at the office or court, I'll get up early to get to the gym.  My point is that we all can make time within the confines of our busy schedule to do what we need to do.  Then it hit me like a glass of cold water to the face.  The vast majority of the residents in Washington Heights are the working class.  You see they work for a living and, in my opinion, the vast majority of the upper class or the rich, do not work for a living.  They think and attend meetings or provide services or a product that enhances people's lives.  The working class, usually work for the rich.  The working class gets paid enough to survive and stay afloat.  The rich are always thinking and setting high standards after high standards.  The majority of the 86,400 seconds in a day, the rich are thinking about moving forward.  While the working class are using their time to work a minimum of 8 hours a day, but usually more to survive.  And, to pour vinegar on the wound, the balance of the time left over after work for the working class is used up sleeping so that they can start all over the next day.  Ever wonder why the working class showers at night while the rich shower in the morning?  The answer is pretty clear.
I am not knocking on the rich.  Believe me, I love the finer things in life.  But as I live and continue to grow, I figured out the rules of the game.  The number one rule is that we are what we think all day long.  Einstein  said "There is nothing good or bad but thinking makes it so." It is all in the mind.  The working class and the rich have the exact same power to live a life of their choosing.  The difference is that one class believes they can do and so they do and the other class believes they can't and so they don't.  Some will believe it when they see it and some will believe it so then they see it.  We have all been given the power by the universe to create and live life to the fullest.  My hope is that once you read this article, you have decided not to waste one second from your 86,400 seconds given to you.  Your time belongs to "you."  Use it creatively.  I leave you with a quote from Martin Luther King, Jr.  "We must use time creatively and, forever realize that the time is always hope to do great things."
