TRUTH
In the Bible in John 8:32 it states "and the truth shall set you free." I always wondered what exactly does that mean? Set me free from what? I was raised as a Catholic and their interpretation of that phrase is to mean, that if you believe in Jesus as the way and savior of all, you are set free. In my adult life as I ventured in my journey to enlightenment, that statement took on a whole different meaning. It raised more questions for me than answers. As a person who has not been part of any organized religion for the majority of my adult life, the aforementioned phrase took on a whole different meaning. To me it is pretty simple. In life, there is a right way and a wrong way to do things. For example, for a gin and tonic to be perfect, it should be crisp and refreshing, never boozy or heavy. In order to mix it the "right way," it should be equal amounts of gin and tonic. If you use a different variation, it will unbalance the traditional gin and tonic. With personal hygiene, it is undisputed that a person should shower everyday to maintain an acceptable level of cleanliness. That is the "right way" of keeping clean. In mathematics there is a "right way" of solving a problem. When you're putting together your kid's Christmas presents, there is a "right way" of doing it. When you start a new job, there is a "right way" of doing it. When you learn how to drive a car, there is a "right way" of driving. You get my point. At that particular point when you figure out the right way, it is a feeling of relief. I have had many life experiences to illustrate my point but the following was intense. In law school I was an honor student. I was serious about my studies. However, there was one class that shortened my life. I say that with humor and sarcasm. That class was real property. I had a professor who was extremely knowledgeable on the topic but lacked in practical experience. In other words, she never practiced law. No, I am not blaming her as in my previous article titled, "blame." I am just trying to bring it home. So when she got to the topic of the rule against perpetuities, I could not understand it. Regardless of how much I studied, the rule against perpetuities scarred me for life. It was so confusing to me that I promised my soul, that I would never practice in the area of wills of which the rule against perpetuities applied. It damaged me so much, that I took an elective course in bankruptcy law which is probably the most boring dead end area of law an attorney can ever practice in. In fact, the attorneys that I know who practice in bankruptcy law are introverts, boring, and are deficient in personality. A deceased individual in a casket has more life that they do. Humor! Back to my experience on the rule against perpetuities. I ended up receiving my worst grade in law school in that course. Fast-forward to when I took a prep course for the bar examination. One of the prep course teachers was a practicing attorney. When we got to the topic of the rules against perpetuities he explained it in a simple, practical way. Although, for me the damage had already been done because I made a promise to my soul to stay away from it, a promise which I have faithfully kept, I had a total feeling of relief! The truth on the rule against perpetuities had set me free.
In a spiritual way there is only one right way of handling any situation. Since we are all created in god's image then, we all have god inside. Since god is all love and everything good, then, life is all good. The problem why there is poverty, illness and hatred around is because individuals have disassociated themselves from their source. The universal powers to be, or call it whatever you desire, is always with you. The statement, "and the truth will set you free," to me is understanding that in the walk of life, you are never alone. This all powerful universal mind that we are all a part of, will solve all of your perceived problems if you believe it and allow it to. And, the way to access it is through prayer or mediation. Now, since I am not a religious person, I meditate often to connect to my source but, prayer will do the same. When someone asks me for advise to a problem, I tell them to mediate on it and a solution is inevitable. To me, knowing that I have this power is the truth that set me free!! I leave you with a poem on point.
