SERVICE
I will bet you that if you ask individuals what is their purpose in life, that most don't know. It is common to go through life like the wind. I read once where "life is like the wind. Sometimes very silent. Sometimes very wild. Sometimes moving very slowly or hastily. Either so dull or so fascinating. But always unpredictable." Today, I received a call from a very close friend of mine and colleague. His adult daughter who was going through some rough times in her life had committed suicide. I was at a loss for words when he called me and I would be lying if I told you that I felt his pain. All I know is that a parent should never be in a position to bury a child. That seems to me contrary to natural law. All I can say is that I felt a sense of loss in my heart for my dear friend. My friend, who I have referred to as my brother, is a kind, loving example of what it means to live a life of service. I met him when I first started my legal career. And from the beginning we developed a spiritual connection. When I was trying to find my way in the legal profession, he gave me what I believe is the most important demonstration of love an individual can give another person, which is time. You see, it is easy to give money or possessions. Anybody can do that. Money or material things can easily be replace but time, that will never be given back. So to my dear friend and, "brother," I love you and I will be there for you regardless! For your precious daughter, although, she left too soon, she for certain is present in spirit.
Whenever, I serve others, that is when I am personally closer to my source. I believe that service is why we are here on earth. Most of us whether we say it publicly or not are on a mission to find out who we really are, where we came from and, where we're going after or stay on earth is over. To me, the answers to the the aforementioned questions are clearer when I am in a mind set of service. You see when I serve others, I am not only giving my time to others who may need it but I am receiving much more than what I am giving. That's because spiritually I am closest to my source when I am serving. If you put aside my children's birth and my lovely wife, Layla, who married me, (I make it a habit of not identifying individuals by name, but my wife is the exception,) that contributed to that experience, I am the happiest when I serve others. I truly believe, we are born to serve. When I refer to service, I am referring to unconditional service. Service with no expectations or conditions for a pay back. Just like the human heart is born to love, I believe we are born to serve. Nelson Mandela wrote, "No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background or religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, then they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally from the human heart than its opposite."
We are all endowed with spiritual components that came free with birth. The problem as I see it is that we are all distracted from our true source with external influences. I implore the reader to to serve others, like a neighbor, and feel the difference. I love living and I love serving. I believe that if you serve others, your life will change in all aspects for the better. I leave you with a quote on point by Albert Einstein, "Only a life lived in service to others is worth living."
Just a thought.
