HISTORY
History is the study of past events, particularly in human affairs. This is so crucial as a society because it allows us to understand our present. Currently there seems to be an atmosphere, although not by a majority, to erase or ignore our past. In fact, some don't even want to acknowledge our history. As an enlightened person, I have a general much broader view and a personal perspective about this topic, which in my opinion should not be controversial. The general view first. Our history as a country or a society is crucial because it allows us to understand who we are currently. Most individual's primary focus is the future. In John Lennon's song, "Beautiful Boy," it contains Lennon's famous quote, "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans." We are all busy making plans forgetting that who we currently are as a society is a part of our past. Some seems to take our history for granted. It is almost as if we were beamed down at this place at this time to just be. Some would rather just forget our history. All the pain and suffering of our country in the past is helpful in understanding where we presently are. In my opinion, the United States is the best country on the planet. In general we are all free to be whatever it is we want to be; to live however it is we want to live. Of course we are a law and order society. Therefore, we have to follows laws, but, in general it is all good. I also understand that the United States is not perfect. We have had some dark and painful moments in our history that some would rather forget. But, I think that is a very dangerous path. If we abolish our history, we have no learning point markers. We then create a situation ripe for repeating the unpleasant parts of our history. As parents I feel we have an obligation to teach our children the greatness of the United States and the not so good past events. It is imperative to give them a balanced perspective. I have personal views about history and life that I hold dear to my heart that my children know about but, I also teach them other views and perspectives. I do this because I don't want them to be like me. I want them to be who they want to be in life, not who I want them to be.
From an enlightened personal perspective, history can be an obstacle in your life. You see, most people live in the past. The way I look at my past is that I acknowledge it and move on. But, it is necessary for me personally to understand about my past because it is a part of who I am today. And, I use it as a guide for me to not repeat my past mistakes. From my spiritual enlightened perspective, my past is not who I am today unless I live in my past. It only has the importance that I give it. I probably was a dumb ass 30 years ago but certainly not presently. No matter how ashamed you are of your past, that is not who you are today. You can be upset with yourself of all the bad or immoral decisions you made in the past but you cannot change the past. You can only change through the power of your mind who you presently are. For some unbeknownst reason, at least to me, some individuals rather live in anger or sadness or conflict. We all have the power to make choices to change our lives for the better or the worse if that is what you prefer, but we need to acknowledge that power. Your power is in your mind! Nothing external, whether it is people or things they do not have any power over you. It only has power if you give it power. So, from a general or personal perspective, let us acknowledge our history. Let us learn from our history and let us move on and understand that we have the power to change if we use our mind and thoughts. I leave you with a poem on point titled, "Yesterday is History."
"Yesterday is history, tis so far away. Yesterday is poetry, tis philosophy. Yesterday is mystery where it is today, while we shrewdly speculate, flutter both away."
Emily Dickinson
Just a thought.
