EMPATH
Besides being a very spiritual person, I always felt there was something else that is part of me. As a little kid, I remember hanging out with my friends and having a great time whether it was playing a pick up game of basketball or a concert at the world famous Madison Square Garden to see one of my favorite artists, Bruce Springsteen. Or, to see my beloved New York Rangers or New York Knicks. I was more than just in the moment at these activities. I would see the whole picture. By this I mean that I had and still do this ability to not just see but feel the moment. It is similar to being on auto pilot as you are driving your vehicle to a location that you have driven to many times. You are aware of your surrounding and you are cautious and in the present but you are in another zone. Then, as I grew older and was involved in high school and collegiate sports, the same would apply. My heightened level of awareness, if you may, was more intense during increased pressure situations. For example, for the baseball enthusiast, if the bases were loaded and it is late in the game and my team was losing and it just so happened that I was the batter at the plate. It was not the usual situation where you hear coaches preach to their player to step out of the batters box, take a few deep breaths and relax. It was as if I could literally feel the crowd's energy and hear some of their thinking.
Later in life, when I was a police officer on the New York City Police Department, the same was true. Whether is was road patrol or later in my career when I was an undercover narcotics agent. I was in countless perilous situations and I had this immense ability to feel and, in many cases, I explain it as aforementioned, to hear the individuals thoughts prior to something happening. I truly believe that ability has saved my life in several situations where I can assure you death was imminent. Moreover, in my current career as an attorney, the exact same is true. I seem to have this ability to predict outcomes which in turn benefit's my client more often then not. As a parent, I have given my son advise that 100% of the time, if he did not listen, the results were to his detriment. I remember a conversation my son had with my wife, his step mom where he told her, "yea, no one could have predicted that one except dad." So then, I was on a mission to discover what exactly is going on with me.
My research has led me to believe that I am an empath. An empath is someone who is highly aware of the emotions of those around them, to the point of feeling those emotions themselves. Empaths see the world different than other people. They are keenly aware of others, their pain points, and what they need emotionally. The feeling and emotions that an empath picks up is both positive and negative. However, since I have chosen to live my life in a positive way and concentrate in the good in individuals, I usually only pick up the good emotions. But, on occasion when I do not meditate or separate from my source, I am not immune from painful or negative thoughts from individuals around me. Being born and raised in New York City, and presently residing in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio, I find myself, the most at peace when I am back in New York City amongst thousands of people walking around the City at any particular time. I usually sleep better in that setting regardless of the noise in the middle of the night. And, when I say noise, I mean sirens blasting, the sound of traffic and people having conversations. I also seem to have my best and productive ideas under those conditions. So there you have it, If you are an empath, there is no need to think that you are weird. I like to think that we are gifted and special. You will certainly beat to the beat of a different drum but, it is a beautiful beat which will create a rhythm in your life that will motivate others to move towards success. I leave you with the following quote by, "Rumi."
"When will you begin that long
journey into yourself?"
Just a though
