DANCE
In my previous writings, I usually mention god. Not a god of any religion but instead a universal power or energy god. An all pure unconditional love god. In a unique way, dance allows me to connect to god or my essence. Other ways I connect to god is by meditating or taking a walk through nature. Or, in an unusual way I feel close to my source when I am in New York City because of the volume of people on the streets. As an empath, I can feel their energy. However, I am not in New York City, I presently live in Columbus, Ohio. Therefore, dance is a mechanism to enhance my spirituality and connection to god. Anytime my youngest daughter who is currently 11 years old and I would be walking down the street regardless of whether it's a mall, strip shopping center, regular street, park etc..., and we hear music, we automatically stop and start dancing. As she is getting older, I think she is less willing to dance but as far as I'm concerned, I am unstoppable. I don't need a partner to dance nor will I ever force her or anyone else to do something against their wishes. Dancing really does something to me. Anyone can do it. We are all born dancers. I believe this because dancing is as easy as walking. If you can walk, you can dance. Don't every sell yourself short. I hear often, especially from males that they can't dance. That is not true. That is contrary to our creative nature as humans. What they are in essence saying is that they are embarrassed or afraid that someone will laugh at them. Those are just barriers that some individuals use. But, I bet you, if you let loose, you will feel what I am referring to regarding the connection between spirituality enhancement and god. Since god it energy it would make sense that it can bring you closer to your source like yoga or any other enjoyable activity.
I also love music, but music alone doesn't do it for me. You see music without dance usually takes me to a place in the past. A place that can be good or bad but dancing focuses on the present. Have you ever seen or heard, usually in a church setting where someone is so overcome by emotions that they start speaking in tongues? Dance does the same to me but in a physical way. When I start dancing it's like I am possessed. Which quite frankly, it is my subconscious or soul taking over and guiding my every move with my body as its dance partner. Dancing is just part of who I am. Since I am a Latino, I guess I am fulfilling the stereotypical view that Latinos love their salsa. When I refer to salsa, it is the type of Latin American dance that incorporates elements of jazz and rock not the salsa that you would put on chips at a Mexican restaurant. So, I remember back in the day wanting to go to a dance club to dance. This is when they were called discos. The problems I had was that most of my male friends were not into dancing for all the aforementioned reasons or, wanted to go clubbing just to pick up girls. So I was pretty much on my own. If I went to a club on my own, without a girl, a very large, inhumane looking door bouncer would either not let me in or, if he was gracious enough to let me in after I greased his palm with a few bucks,I would end up dancing on the corner of the dance floor by myself. Although, I was never really alone because it was my soul and I dancing. But, nevertheless, the "crowd, " would think that I am weird. Looking back, I know now why I always had lots of room to dance! Humor!! However, if you see girls dancing alone or two girls dancing together it was totally acceptable. Not fair!!
Dancing is not only good for you spiritually but physically as well. It keeps you active and moving around. Dancing is my sanctuary. From the moment I start dancing, I can feel an internal cleansing. Since dancing requires physical movement, it is generally a healthy activity. A healthy activity contributes to a healthy body which in turn relates to a healthy mind. In my opinion dancing is a universal language. It should be spoken by everyone. We all have it in us we just don't all use it or are unaware of it. We are all creators by nature. It is in us to feed our creative spirit. That is our responsibility. After you read this article, I encourage you to put on some music, close your eyes for a few seconds and let your soul take over. It will become addictive. I leave you with a poem on point titled, "The Dancer."
"I met an artist, now my days are painted in lavender. Every hour a different hue. I dream in watercolor, dance in blurred tones with each stroke I glide moved by inspiration. I am his vision, his dancer, his impression of beauty. This canvas my stage as I perform for you."
