DISCIPLINE
I was reading where the Marines have a saying, "Everyone wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die." So, I started thinking about that saying and I believe it to be true for the majority of individuals. Most individuals want to do great things but they are empty vessels when in comes to action. They say they want to do this or that but, it's only words with no substance. I believe the problem is that they lack discipline. Discipline seems to have a negative or punishment connotation about it but, regarding this article, it is a positive character trait. Not an inherited trait but rather a learned behavior. Discipline can be developed by everyone. It is not reserved for a few. Although, only a few truly understand the importance of being disciplined. Some are more inclined towards discipline because of a strict upbringing or military background but that doesn't mean that we can't all be disciplined. If you think otherwise, you're just using an excuse to justify your lack of success. Most, if not all, of the successful individuals that you know or read about possess discipline. We look at individuals that have made it to the top of their profession and, we admire and are grateful for their contributions to us personally or, to society in general. Regardless of whether it's in acting, dance, medicine, sports, law, engineering, etc... These successful individuals are highly disciplined. They put into their profession unlimited amount of hours to be where they are. I remember when I was in law school, the amount of hours I put into my studies so I could graduate law school. And, subsequently to have the privilege, honor and trust of an individual to confide in me their deepest secrets. While my friends were out enjoying their weekends, I was burning the midnight oil reading and studying to get to where I wanted to be. I was disciplined. Look at your life up until this very point. Anything positive that you have accomplished has been because you were disciplined. You must have wanted it bad enough.
Lets say you decide you want to run a marathon and set the alarm for 4:30 am to start your training. And, it's cold outside and dark and your pillow is fluffed up exactly to where you want it and, once the alarm sounds, you resist the temptation to stay in bed and get up to start your training, that is discipline. That is what separates you from the person who says they want to run a marathon but is lacking the discipline to follow it up with action. To me, self discipline is the holy grail. If you master it, you will accomplish whatever you want in life. Discipline starts in the mind. Once you set your mind to do something half the battle is won. You then must resist all temptations that will try to stop you. You must keep your eyes focused on the prize. Whatever you need to do, you must do to keep focused on the prize. To me, discipline is a form of self control. We all have, not just the ability, but the obligation to control ourselves. If you don't believe me look at how many individuals are incarcerated because they lack self control. "Self-discipline is a form of freedom. Freedom from laziness and lethargy, freedom from expectations and demands of others, freedom from weakness, fear and doubt. Self discipline allows a (fill in the blank), to feel his individuality, his inner strength, his talent. He is master of, rather than slave to, his thoughts and emotions." H.A. Dorfman
We all have the ability to succeed in life. You just need to want it bad enough. In order to live the life of your dreams you need to change your ways, if you are not where you expect to be at this point in your life. It truly boggles my mind when individuals do the same things, day in and day out but expect things to get better. If you want things to get better you have to get better at whatever it is you want to accomplish. You need to change the way you think about yourself and life in general. Changing the way you think is not a difficult task. In my opinion, since changing the way you think is so easy, most individuals don't believe it to be effective and thereby are defeating their dreams without even trying. I hope that this article will help unlock your unlimited potential. I leave you with a quote on point. "With self-discipline most anything is possible." Theodore Roosevelt.
Just a thought.
