CHARACTER
The character that I am referring to in this article is not a character in a movie but instead the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual. I believe that if you are real honest with yourself, that most individuals have something in their character that they would like to change. Contrary to old school thinking, character can be changed. Individuals typically mold their character from their parents, friends, teachers and life experiences. Does that mean once a thief always a thief? Can it mean that once a law violator you will always be a law violator? Can it mean that once you decided early on that you have no interest of ever being a parent that you will never have children? Can it mean that if you had a bad experience with being forced to eat broccoli as a child that you will never eat broccoli again? Can it mean that if you were ever a victim in the past that your character will be flawed to a degree that you will attract victimhood. The simple answer is, No! If the way you conduct yourself causes you hardships and limits your opportunities in life, you better believe that not only is changing your character possible but, an obligation. I remember once having a conversation with a colleague about character and he was adamant that character cannot be changed. I believe that individuals who believe that, are not open to any change in their lives. I believe if you change the way you think, you change your habits. If you change your habits you change your character. If you change your character you change your life.
My entire adult life has been about changing and growing spiritually. From my experiences in life, changing the parts of my character that I was not proud of was not difficult. I think of the old Nike slogan when I want to make a positive change in my life, "Just do it!" There are countless examples of individuals like Michael Milken who was a financier that plead guilty for violating U.S. securities laws and spent time in prison and paid a $600 million dollar fine and totally changed his life around after his release. Today he has a net worth of approximately 3.7 billion dollars and has founded the Milken Institute and is involved in several medical research philanthropies to combat cancer. I believe we all have a moral compass that is part of a much bigger component. I like to call it our internal GPS. We are all part of god. God is pure perfection. Since we are all a part of god because we were all created in his image, we are pure perfection. God or, our essence, is our guiding mechanism. It came with us since before birth, and it is free!! However, it can only guide us if we do not resist. It is built into us as a default mode. The only way to receive this free guidance is if we use it. That is where the problem lies with so many. They just don't believe it and therefore do not use it. The irony is that once you open up the line of communication to your source, life becomes easy. Life will take on a new meaning. The way to open this door to a new life is through your thinking. If you think good, positive thoughts, you are on the right path. From my personal experience, all you have to do is commit to making good, positive decisions daily. The more you make good, positive decisions, it creates an expectation to continue to do so, and this is how you change your character. So start creating the perfect person that you are meant to be. I leave you with a quote by Albert Einstein.
"Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character."
Just a thought.
