ART
The dictionary defines art as, " the expression of ideas and emotions through a physical medium, like painting, sculpture, film, dance, writing, photography, or theatre." In other words, it is the creation of something. Well by that definition, we are all artists. Human beings are all in the process of creating; that is our core purpose in life. We may not all be creating movies in a conventional way, but we are surely creating. At the very minimum, we're all creating our lives. The way I see it, art, is not just reserved for the traditional theatres or art galleries. We are creating when we bring something forward for the benefit of others. Maybe it is better said by stating, "art is just creation." We all, without exceptions are creators. You might be a person that goes to work 40 plus hours a week, comes home and has dinner, watches some TV, spends some time with your wife and children before you go to bed and start the same process the next day. So, you may ask yourself how in the aforementioned scenario is that person an artist? Well, that person has created that lifestyle. That person was instrumental in creating children. When he goes shopping or grabs lunch or has a professional visit and pays his copay, he is not only contributing to society but is assisting in the creation of other people's lives. As I'm writing this article, I'm not only creating this article but as I look out my office window, I see a landscaper mowing the grass and he too is an artist because he is mowing and shaping my neighbor's lawn.
We are all under this misguided perception that art is reserved for the traditional artist with special skills, but that is not true. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy art in the traditional sense, but the purpose of this article is to expand the basic concept of what art is all about. I recently visited the Sisteen Chapel, and I was amazed at how beautiful it was in person. I have seen countless pictures of the Sisteen Chapel, and I have read about it but, those experiences are not even close to the experience of seeing it in person. I mention this to make a point that I like traditional art but, to me, the past traditional definition is outdated. At the very minimum we are all starring in our own movie. Some movies are better than others but so what. We all have the ability and strength to live courageously. Most individuals sell themselves short because of the fear of what others may think. To me, that is a miserable way to live your life. Mark Twain stated, "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you did not do than by the ones you did." I encourage you to use your newly discovered artistic ability and whip out the metaphorical paint brush and start painting your picture. All it takes is your first stroke of the brush to propel you into the fabulous life you deserve. I leave you with a quote on point. "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up." Pablo Picasso.
Just a thought.
